Most dental implants are small titanium screws placed directly into the jaw bone. They need a certain amount of healthy bone to hold them, and when you’ve lost teeth a long time ago, or had infections, gum disease or failed implants, that bone is often no longer there.
A subperiosteal implant takes a different approach. Instead of going into the bone, a custom titanium framework is designed to sit precisely on top of it, hugging the shape of your jaw beneath the gum. Small posts emerge through the gum, and a fixed bridge of teeth attaches to those posts. In most cases the teeth can be fitted on the day of surgery, so you leave with a working smile rather than a gap or a temporary denture.
Because it rests on the bone rather than inside it, a subperiosteal implant can be used in places where there’s too little bone for other solutions, including the lower jaw, where some alternatives aren’t possible at all.
